The DA has welcomed the seizure of luxury vehicles and other assets belonging to Hangwani Maumela, who is implicated in the R2bn Tembisa Hospital corruption.

DA Gauteng shadow health MEC Jack Bloom urged the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to continue the investigations and ensure those implicated are arrested.

“We need to see the masterminds of this looting in court, charged and arrested, not just their cars being loaded onto trucks,” he said.

Bloom added that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) sometimes moved slowly in corruption cases and urged it to move faster when the SIU’s final report is released next year.

“The NPA must move faster. The evidence is clear. It’s time for prosecutions. We cannot afford another Life Esidimeni situation, where nine years later not a single person has been charged.

“The theft at Tembisa Hospital cost lives and crippled basic health care. Those responsible must be held accountable.”

Bloom applauded the SIU for going after the kingpins and said the stolen money must be recovered and be returned to Gauteng hospitals.

“The money should be used to fix hospitals, buy medicines and ensure patients receive proper care.”
