National police commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola has revealed that Patriotic Alliance (PA) deputy president Kenny Kunene was seen at murder accused Katiso “KT” Molefe’s house twice.
In July, Kunene was found at Molefe’s house when the police came to arrest Molefe for the alleged murder of musician Oupa Sefoka, popularly known as DJ Sumbody.
When asked what he was doing at the house, Kunene said he was accompanying a journalist from his online publication to interview Molefe. His party suspended him pending investigations. Kunene then resigned as a Johannesburg councillor and the city’s transport MMC.
In September, he was cleared of wrongdoing and reinstated.
Testifying before parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating allegations of corruption in the criminal justice system, Masemola said information was provided to him by his team.
“What the team reported to me is that he was there twice,” Masemola said.
“One of the occasions was at the house, and the other time they turned him away at the gate.”
He confirmed Kunene was with a journalist when he was found there the second time.
“I’m aware there was a journalist, but I don’t know who they are. However, they did find him at the house.”
PA MP Ashley Sauls challenged Masemola’s claims, saying he cannot rely on what he was told when he was not at Molefe’s house.
“You cannot state for a fact that he was there twice. You are basing it on what you were told. Your report is not a fact. The general cannot come here based on a report and state factually that Kunene was at Molefe’s house twice.”
On Friday, the Johannesburg high court granted Molefe bail of R400,000, overturning an earlier decision by the Alexandra magistrate’s court that denied his release on bail.
