Fallout over death threat case could affect ‘service delivery at mortuary’: DA

The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Tuesday urged the Gauteng Health Department to act “speedily” to contain the fallout over a “botched disciplinary action” against a doctor who made death threats against a mortuary manager.“It's a real mess caused by typical poor management and handling of discipline by the department‚” said the DA’s Jack Bloom.“Seven female staff members had laid a formal grievance against the doctor‚ and he was found guilty in November 2015 on three charges‚ including the death threat‚ insubordination and a verbal insult levelled at a colleague‚” he explained. The specialist doctor received the sanction of “a final written warning and three months of unpaid suspension‚ but this was overturned on appeal in April this year by Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu".The reasons given were that Mahlangu “felt there were ‘procedural errors’‚ a lack of evidence relating to the charges and that some of the complainants appeared to have ganged up against the doctor‚ who himself had laid grievances against them”.Bloom warned that “service delivery could be affected at this mortuary where staff say that things have become desperate”. ..
