The South African National Basketball squad returns to South Africa on Wednesday evening after winning bronze medal at the first-ever 2017 BRICS Games in Guangzhou‚ China.

The South Africans beat India 88-75 in the play-offs to earn themselves the medal in a nail-biting encounter.

Organisers said the event was created "to provide a sound atmosphere for BRICS co-operation to strengthen relations and promote sport exchange and development among all BRICS nations".

Coming in as underdogs in the competition‚ coach Gilchrist Graig's side surprised their opponents when they put on a brave fight.

The competition featured all the BRICS nations - Brazil‚ Russia‚ India‚ China and South Africa - and they competed in basketball‚ volleyball and WUSHU (Kung-Fu).

The games are set to rotate among all the BRICS member countries.
