1967 — Opener Trevor Goddard makes 59 as South Africa reach the 176-run target to win the fifth and final Test against Australia at St George’s Park by seven wickets and with it the series 3-1.

1972 — Carole Gildenhuys scores 94 for the South African women as the first Test against New Zealand at Newlands ends in a draw.

1975 — Paul Blackbeard wins the 100m freestyle to become the first man to win six individual titles at the SA swimming championships at Ellis Park. The 17-year-old also won the 200m freestyle, both butterfly races and the two individual medleys and was also a member of the three victorious Natal relay squads. Until then only Karen Muir had won six individual titles at a national gala, having achieved that in 1969. The previous best by a man had been five, by Lee McGregor in 1971.

1976 — Heavyweight Kallie Knoetze makes his professional debut against Jeff Ellis at the Wembley ice rink in Johannesburg, winning by second-round knockout. The big-hitting, loud-mouthed policeman went on to fight in an elimination series for the WBA crown vacated by Muhammad Ali in the late 1970s.

1997 — June Siko is blown away in the second round of his challenge against WBF junior-featherweight champion Torsak Pongsupa in Thailand. Siko had never held a provincial SA title, let alone a national belt.

1998 — Bafana Bafana are dethroned as African champions at the final hurdle when they go down 0-2 to Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The Egyptians wrapped it up early with Ahmed Hassan scoring in the fifth minute and Tarek Mostafa just eight minutes later. Neither Benni McCarthy nor Hossam Hassan, the tournament’s leading scorers on seven, could add to their tallies. It was Egypt’s fourth victory in the history of the tournament.

1998 — Shaun Pollock takes five wickets on the third day of the second Test against Pakistan in Durban.

1999 — Daryll Cullinan, resuming on 85, makes an unbeaten 246 in the first innings of the first Test against New Zealand in Auckland. Gary Kirsten, resuming on 109, was out for 128.

2003 — Gabula Vabaza outpoints SA-based Tanzanian Mbwana Matumla over 12 rounds to retain his marginal WBU junior-bantamweight title in East London.

2004 — Andre Thysse’s challenge for Markus Beyer’s WBC super-middleweight title ends in a 12-round points defeat in Dresden.

2009 — AB de Villiers, resuming on 13, scores an unbeaten 104 as South Africa are bowled out for 220 by Australia in the first Test at the Wanderers, a first-innings deficit of 246.

2020 — Lizelle Lee scores 101 off 60 balls and Suné Luus an unbeaten 61 to boost the South African women  to 195/3 on their way to beating Thailand by 113 runs in a World Cup match in Canberra. Luus made an unbeaten 61 and Shabnim Ismail took 3/8 and Luus 3/15.

2022 — Kyle Verreynne scores an unbeaten 136 as the Proteas declare their second innings on 354/9 in the second Test against New Zealand in Christchurch, setting the Kiwis a target of 426.

2023 — Aiden Markram scores 115 on the opening day of the first Test against the West Indies at Centurion.
