1899 — South Africa are bowled out for 35 as England win the second and final Test at Newlands by 210 runs to take the series 2-0. Opener Albert Powell was the only batsman to make double figures in the second innings, scoring 11, while England used only two bowlers to complete the wreckage inside 23 overs. That was South Africa’s eighth Test and eighth consecutive defeat — the nation’s longest losing streak.
1981 — Henry Khumalo comes on as a substitute and scores three second-half goals to lead Orlando Pirates to an unlikely Champion of Champions final victory over Kaizer Chiefs at Orlando Stadium. Chiefs had won the first leg of the final in East London 1-0, and a minute after halftime Peter Mokotedi scored to put them 2-0 up on aggregate. Then came Khumalo’s miraculous feat, with his third goal coming in the 90th minute through a penalty after a handball offence.
1994 — Andrew Hudson (63) and Jonty Rhodes (66) lead South Africa to 227/6 in the sixth ODI against Australia in Port Elizabeth. Four bowlers — Fanie de Villiers, Craig Matthews, Eric Simons and Tim Shaw — take two wickets apiece as they bowl out the visitors for 201 at the start of the 50th over. The win gives South Africa a 4-2 lead in the eight-match series.
1999 — Penny Heyns leaves the world short-course championships in Hong Kong with three silvers in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke. Heyns finished behind Japan’s Masami Tanaka in all three events.
2005 — Jacques Kallis, resuming on 1, scores an unbeaten 109 as South Africa survive to stumps on 269/4 in their follow-on innings to draw the first Test against the West Indies in Georgetown, still 86 runs behind.
2006 — Makhaya Ntini takes four wickets for a match haul of 10, but Australia win the third and final Test at the Wanderers by two wickets for a 3-0 series clean sweep.
2008 — AB de Villiers, resuming on 59, scores an unbeaten 217 on the second day of the second Test against India in Ahmedabad, pushing the Proteas to a first-innings total of 494/7 declared and a lead of 418. Jacques Kallis, resuming on 60, made 132.
2012 — Cyclist Nolan Hoffman takes silver in the men’s scratch, a 60-lap race totalling 15km, at the track world championships in Melbourne.
2014 — The Proteas take on India in a World T20 semifinal in Dhaka but lose by six wickets. Faf du Plessis made 58 from 41 balls to help South Africa to 172/4, but Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 72 from 44 lifted India to 176/4 with five balls remaining.
2014 — Chloe Tryon scores 40 as the South Africans are bowled out for 101 on their way to losing their T20 World Cup semifinal against England in Mirpur by nine wickets.
2021 — The Proteas beat Pakistan by 17 runs in the second ODI at the Wanderers to draw level in the three-match series at 1-1. Captain Temba Bavuma contributed 92 runs, with opener Quinton de Kock adding 80 and David Miller an unbeaten 50 off 27 balls as South Africa amassed 341/6. In the chase, opener Fakhar Zaman made 193 from 155 deliveries, the highest ODI score on a South Africa ground, beating the 185 held by Faf du Plessis since February 2017.
2022 — Keshav Maharaj takes 7/32 as South Africa bowl out Bangladesh for 53 to win the first Test at Kingsmead by 220 runs.
