Bulls concede top spot to Cheetahs‚ but target home semi as Currie Cup goes to the wire

The Blue Bulls have conceded that their arch-rivals‚ the Free State Cheetahs‚ look set to claim the top spot on the Currie Cup log.But coach Nollis Marais' charges still have their eyes firmly set on a home semifinal berth.Following their impressive 57-20 victory against an in-form Griquas side last weekend‚ the Bulls sit almost comfortably in third place on the log.And with only one pool stage match remaining‚ the Pretoria side is in with a chance of booking a home semi.It is the Cheetahs who top the table after an unbeaten run which has seen the Free Staters winning all six of their matches so far. The Bulls have conceded the domestic competition’s top spot to the Cheetahs and acknowledged that they will now be looking at claiming the second spot. The Sharks are on equal points with the Bulls but sit in second place as a result of a superior points’ difference.“I don’t think we’ll end up No1 because the Cheetahs have played well to remain unbeaten‚" Bulls coach Nollis Marais admitted.“If we do our things well‚ control what we can‚ [then] we will make sure that we get a home semifinal.”The Cheetahs have looked unstoppable this season in the domestic competition‚ dominating all their opponents and ensuring an unbeaten run. While the Bulls only have one match remaining in the pool stages – on Friday in Wellington against Boland Cavaliers – the Cheetahs still have two more matches to play‚ against the struggling Pumas on Friday and the Griquas next week. The Bloemfontein side has not had many disruptions in the team and was able to have continuity from their Super Rugby campaign.Other top sides were not so lucky as they have had some of their personnel on international duty while others suffered from injuries.Marais is content with the progress his charges have made in the competition‚ despite the inexperience in his side.“I believe the worst game we’ve had this year was against the Cheetahs (a 20-43 defeat)."When we were on attack we lost the ball and they converted their chances."The thing about this team‚ and I knew it would take time‚ is that they should believe in what they do. They need to just play‚ mistakes will come."It’s about how you come back from those mistakes and how you manage the game‚” the Bulls coach said.“I lost my toys there at certain stages (against Griquas last weekend) because of game management. Those are the things that will hurt you in a semi or final.“The guys are playing well and there is confidence now in the team… The belief is getting there and there is energy in the side.” The defending champions‚ the Golden Lions‚ and early season favourites Western Province (WP) are in danger of missing out on a playoff berth.Unlikely candidates‚ the Griquas‚ may stand in their way of finishing in the top four spots on the log and therefore Johan Ackermann’s pride and John Dobson’s Cape side may miss the cut.The Griquas are currently in fourth place on the log with only one point separating them from WP in fifth while the Lions have a deficit of two points from making it into the top four spots.WP will have it tough in Kimberley this weekend against the Griquas‚ while the Lions have a chance of edging closer as they face the bottom-of-the-log Eastern Province Kings. It will go down to the wire next week in the final round of matches when the Lions face the Sharks at Ellis Park and WP meet Boland. - TMG Digital..
