Maritzburg United are pondering legal action against their former coach, Steve Komphela, who stands accused of failing to pay the required compensation to the Team of Choice before starting his new job at Kaizer Chiefs.

Komphela, whose contract with United was meant to expire in 2017, was unveiled by Chiefs on June 18, five days after he resigned as United coach and, according to KickOff, Maritzburg chairman Farouk Kadodia says the club is in talks with their legal team to find a best way forward.

“There has been  no finality on the issue yet and our legal team will decide what is the best way of sorting out this situation,” said Kadodia.

“What we are getting from Komphela’s camp is that the reason why this matter has not been sorted out it’s because they are basically dependant on the new team [Kaizer Chiefs] to take care of the matter.

“But this is a matter between Maritzburg and Komphela, not his new team. He knew very well that he was supposed to take care of the compensation before 1 July.”
