Ertugral courting trouble if he persists with Ovono in Orlando Pirates' goal

Muhsin Ertugral risks getting his tenure at Orlando Pirates off to a poor start should he persist with Felipe Ovono in the Buccaneers’ goal. Ovono’s two fumbling performances‚ and Pirates’ regular No.1 Brighton Mhlongo’s relegation to the stands‚ have been the talking point of the Buccaneers’ start to the season.Ovono played a big hand in Bucs’ 2-1 MTN8 quarterfinal defeat to Bidvest Wits at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday night‚ where the keeper spilled the ball to allow in both the Clever Boys’ goals. That nightmare display‚ where the hapless Equatorial Guinean international’s confidence sagged to the point that he could barely catch a ball‚ overshadowed even the hat trick by Tendai Ndoro that saw Bucs start their season with a 3-1 league win against Golden Arrows.PSL deadline day transfer activity does not quite live up to the hypeAfter an incredibly busy transfer window‚ it was a relatively sedate final day on Wednesday as just a handful of clubs made final attempts to bolster their squads for the new season.Ntshumayelo yet to appeal his four-year ban for testing positive for cocaineThandani Ntshumayelo and his representatives are yet to lodge an appeal on his four-year ban for testing positive for cocaine‚ says SA Institute for Drug Free Sport CEO Khalid Galant. And Ertugral’s defence of Ovono afterwards has left Bucs fans wondering what the dependable Mhlongo might have done to justify being left out of the match-18 twice now‚ with Jackson Mabokgwane preferred on the bench.“I was aware of that problem – we couldn’t deal with it‚” Ertugral said of Ovono being barely able to deal with Wits peppering the keeper with crosses in the second half at Bidvest Stadium.“But I think we were also defending very deep – too deeply. Obviously that’s also not his [Ovono’s] game‚ but in the end he lost his confidence.“But we don’t now point fingers at the goalkeeper – we also point them at the players who should have scored the second one. And at 2-0 the game would have been over.”Ex-Pirates winger Sifiso Myeni joins WitsBidvest Wits have signed winger Sifiso Myeni from Orlando Pirates, the Clever Boys have announced on their official Twitter page on Wednesday. Ertugral also preferred to blame his side’s defence for putting Ovono under pressure.“Ja‚ the defensive line was a bit problematic. They made so many fouls in areas where it played into Wits’ hands‚” Ertugral said.Ovono’s performance has seen the poor Equatorial Guinean become the butt of opposition fans’ jokes on social media.Ertugral preferred Ovono to Mhlongo and Mabokgwane even after the keeper had fumbled a cross in Bucs’ opener to allow Arrows to equalise‚ with the goal-minder’s blushes saved by two more goals by Ndoro. The new Bucs coach must now consider nursing Ovono back to confidence during the current Fifa international break‚ and to risk persisting with him when Bucs’ league season resumes away against Ajax Cape Town on September 13.Bidvest Wits advance to MTN8 semis after 2-1 win over Orlando PiratesBidvest Wits were gifted two soft goals from goalkeeping errors, which was the difference in the end in their tightly-contested 2-1 MTN8 quarterfinal victory against Orlando Pirates at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday night. Or Ertugral will have to backtrack‚ and a change will be made.“We’ll think about that. We need to see what kind of situation Ovono is in‚ and how we deal with it‚” the coach said.“Obviously‚ with Orlando Pirates you are always under a microscope‚ and we’ll see.”Ertugral has arrived at Pirates heralded as the coach to reverse the club’s inability to win trophies‚ with one Nedbank Cup to boast by Bucs in four years despite reaching seven cup finals. An early opportunity at silverware has been lost – with Ovono the central villain of the piece – by crashing out of the MTN8 at the first hurdle‚ despite Pirates looking slick‚ fit and well-drilled early in the season. Can the coach afford many more such liabilities at the start of such a demanding new occupation? - TMG Digital..
