Former Manchester United midfielder Quinton Fortune is likely to return to Bafana Bafana as an assistant to head coach Stuart Baxter.

Insiders say that Baxter is considering Fortune as his second assistant, while South Africa Under-20 coach Thabo Senong looks certain to get the nod as first assistant.

"Stuart is interested in having [Fortune] as one of his assistants but I am not sure if he has already spoken to him," the insider told The Times. "I know that in the past Quinton Fortune spoke about coaching in South Africa and maybe this is an opportunity that will appeal to him."

The SA Football Association is keen to have former Bafana players, who have played at the highest level, involved with the technical teams of the national sides.

Baxter is yet to finalise his technical team and Safa media manager Dominic Chimhavi would not be drawn on the latest developments.

During a recent trip to Nigeria, where Bafana beat their bitter foes 2-0 in a Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, Baxter traveled with goalkeeper coach Alex Heredia and Senong as part of his temporary technical team.

Should Baxter get his man, Fortune, 40, would follow in the footsteps of his former Bafana teammate, Benni McCarthy, who has joined Cape Town City as coach. Fortune won 47 Bafana caps and played at the 1998 and 2002 World Cups. He got his full set of coaching badges in 2012 but does not have coaching experience at the highest level.
