The ripple effect of losing in the opening round of the Carling Knockout Cup against AmaZulu has seen abrupt changes to the coaching team at Kaizer Chiefs.

On Tuesday, the club announced it was parting ways with head coach Molefi Ntseki after just four months on the job.

Ntseki faced the axe after Amakhosi lost 1-0 to AmaZulu at FNB Stadium on Saturday. This sparked another incident of supporters hurling missiles at the coach — for the third time this season.

“Molefi Ntseki’s tenure as head coach of Kaizer Chiefs has ended amicably by mutual consent. Given the recent run of disappointing results, the parties agreed that this was the best course of action under the prevailing circumstances,” the club said in a statement.

Chiefs youth development coach Cavin Johnson has taken over Ntseki's role in the interim. It remains unclear when a permanent coach would be appointed.

Some football supporters on social media seemed unhappy with Ntseki’s departure, saying he needed more time to improve results. Others celebrated the news. Many were not convinced a club suffering a devastating eight-season trophy drought could improve its fortunes simply by changing the coach.

Chiefs fan Nhlanhla Motsa wrote on social media: “My Kaizer Chiefs management doesn't listen. The fans told management that Ntseki wasn't the right coach for the club and they, management, went ahead and appointed him.

“After a string of poor results. He has been fired. Fans vindicated. Now management has appointed an interim coach, but we aren't told when a permanent coach is going to be placed.

“How long is the interim? Chiefs need an international coach with experience and pedigree, management find that coach, ASAP.”

Another, Lehana Matsau, wrote: “Ntseki must go and acquire a lot of technical expertise and start coaching teams like Black Leopards and JDR Stars FC. He will come alright. His downfall was jumping from zero to coaching a big brand like Chiefs.”
