Fans of hip-hop stars Cassper Nyovest and Nasty C were disappointed after the Durban leg of their African Throne tour had to be cancelled due to sound issues before the performance of the headline acts.
The duo were meant to headline the continental tour at People’s Park outside the Moses Mabhida Stadium on a rainy Saturday night.
However, after multiple issues with the sound during and after some performances, the sound system finally gave up at around midnight, just as the two rappers were about to get on stage.
Event organiser and Bridge Entertainment boss Tlee Moiloa told TimesLIVE Premium that challenges with the sound were nothing new for them during this continent-wide tour but stressed this was the worst one.
“We’ve done multiple countries and different cities. We’ve had difficulties but tonight was the worst one because our sound box just blew up, which meant nothing could go on. Maybe if one speaker burns you can still make a plan, but when the main sound box blows up there's absolutely nothing you can do,” he said.
“The reason for that is the rain that wasn’t initially predicted. Multiple times the sound went off and the guys tried to make a contingency plan but unfortunately it got to a point when it got rained on and it blew up just before the main acts were about to go on.”
Fans said they were having a great time despite the rain before the show was cancelled.
“We’re very disappointed that they did not perform because we came all this way for them. They must do another event where will use the same tickets,” said Snethemba Msomi.
“The whole logistics of coming here from Mpumalanga did not come cheap and the only people we came for at the end of the day is the African Throne [Nyovest and Nasty C], so to leave without seeing them is something I cannot explain at this point. They must either refund us, even if it’s just for the tickets, or do something,” said Percy Mahlangu.
Tlee apologised on behalf of the organisers and the two headline artists, saying they were just as frustrated as the fans. He said it was too early to make any promises.
“It was a tough decision to make — the guys are not happy and we’re not happy. This is Nasty C’s home town and he wanted to show his home base what it is that he’s taking across the world with his colleague and friend Cassper — and it happened.”
He said they were assessing the situation and would release a statement within 48 hours mapping the way forward.
“We understand that some fans even came from outside Durban to support the show. It’s very disappointing, we don’t take it lightly. Unfortunately there hasn’t been enough time for us to assess the contingency. That’s why we just want to be very certain with whatever contingency and not just lie to people for the sake of PR.”
On how much it cost them to put thee show together, he would only reveal it was "in the millions".
