Chinese marque Lepas, a new premium sub-brand of Chery, has confirmed it will debut in South Africa in 2026.
Lepas (derived from “leap” and “passion”) made its global debut in April 2025 at the Auto Shanghai show and will only be offered in Chery’s international markets, not China.
It is aimed at younger, style-conscious drivers and will become the newest Chery group brand in South Africa after Omoda had its local launch in 2023 followed by Jaecoo in 2024.
Its first model is the Lepas L8, a premium SUV expected to be positioned as a more exclusive offering above the similarly-sized Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, of which the top-of-the-range Tiggo 8 Pro Max model is priced at R731,900.
At 4,688mm in length, the L8 is also likely to be pitched against rivals such as the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Haval H7, Volkswagen Tiguan, Mazda CX-60 and Toyota Rav4.
Chery confirms Lepas will eventually span the entire spectrum of mainstream segments, offering a portfolio that ranges from versatile family movers to luxury options.
Smaller Lepas L6 and L4 SUV models will be available in the future, as well as an electric L2 and a pair of sedans.
Verene Petersen, national marketing manager for Chery SA, said: “The introduction of Lepas, and its first model the L8 luxury SUV, adds a dynamic new layer to Chery’s growing portfolio, combining refined design and premium innovation to meet the expectations of a new generation of consumers.”
To lead the local rollout of Lepas, Chery SA has appointed Letitia Herold, previously with Honda SA, as national brand and marketing manager. She said Lepas is a brand that celebrates modern success, personal expression and confidence on every journey.
The L8 has eye-catching styling with sculpted exterior lines inspired by what Lepas describes as the muscular stance of a leopard, a spacious and sumptuously trimmed interior and the latest driver-assist technologies.
Lepas has not yet confirmed what will power the L8, but it’s likely to inherit the petrol turbo engines from the Tiggo 8 Pro and possibly also offer hybrid and electric versions.
