“I am in Cape Town in my office in parliament. I was watching the game here. I am an Arsenal fan. I didn’t even know Facebook checked me in in London,” he said.

This as the department of tourism is embroiled in a controversial R900m deal to sponsor the English football side.

The Sunday Times reported Sisulu is set to pull the plug on the deal after long meetings with the board of South African Tourism that went on late into Saturday evening.

The deal, which came to light last week, had South Africans up in arms. The resignation of three SA Tourism board members was announced on Friday.

The proposed deal would have seen South Africa pay the team £42.5m (about R900m) for a three-year branding sponsorship starting in July.
