Wealthy patrons attending the Durban July will shell out up to R9,000 to be wined and dined at luxe hospitality marquees on race day.

On Saturday about 50,000 punters, fashionistas and socialites will converge on Durban's Greyville racecourse for one of South Africa's foremost racing and social events of the year.

Hospitality marquees will lay out the red carpet for those with cash to splash, with everything from bespoke bars and opulent buffets to exclusive private lounges, masseuse services, bottle service, private totes and pamper stations.

This year’s theme “Marvels of Mzansi” celebrates South Africa’s heritage, cultural diversity and landscapes.

eThekwini municipality is anticipating a major economic boost — projected at R278.6m in direct spend and a R689.4m GDP contribution. More than 4,000 jobs are expected to be created by the event.

The city believes businesses across various sectors, including the informal economy, will experience an economic injection. “Other sectors set to benefit from the Durban July are fashion and textile, transportation, restaurants, hair and beauty, and businesses selling fast food,” it said.

Sinayo Hospitality, which comprises the Grandstand Silver Ring indoor and outdoor suite spanning over 1500m², has VIP packages from R3,900 to R8,900 per person.

The high-end package includes an elegantly decorated lounge area, indoor and outdoor space offering a direct premium view of racetrack, bespoke bar facilities with a complimentary selection of drinks between 11am and 5pm, an array of canapés and a lavish buffet.

Dudley Horn of Beluga Hospitality told TimesLIVE Premium they’ve had a very strong response this year.

“There’s been high levels of early interest and many of our packages were secured well in advance, particularly by returning guests who value the consistent quality we deliver.

“Our hospitality packages range from R6,995 to R7,495 pp ex VAT, depending on the location, inclusions and level of exclusivity. These packages include full-day premium catering, open-bar service with top-shelf brands, luxury décor, prime race views, entertainment, parking and seamless VIP hosting,” he said.

Horn said food lies at the heart of the Beluga experience, “and this year our culinary team has truly raised the bar”.

“Guests can look forward to an elegant arrival harvest table, a generous and carefully curated luncheon buffet, and indulgent post-race curry stations — all designed to offer a perfect balance of sophistication and comfort.”

Horn said while economic pressures are a factor, they are seeing clients place even greater emphasis on quality over quantity.

“They’re being more selective about the events they attend, but the Durban July thankfully remains a standout favourite on their calendar.”

Phindile Zulu, director of Halisi Afrique, said they will be the first luxury marquee to “showcase and glamorise” traditional Maskandi music at the event.

“This bold move perfectly aligns with the 2025 theme, 'Marvels of Mzansi' and is in collaboration with the Durban July Amabhinca Hospitality,” said Zulu.

“Long regarded as a gathering for the elite, the Durban July has traditionally leant towards cosmopolitan glamour. This year, however, Halisi Afrique is shifting the narrative by spotlighting one of the nation’s most authentic and beloved music genres. Maskandi, which captures the heart of isiZulu identity, storytelling and rhythm and will now echo through the Halisi Afrique marquee.”

The line-up includes Mthandeni “Igcokama Elisha”, amapiano sensation Mawhoo, kwaito legend Mdu Masilela and house music maestro DJ Merlon.

“This collaboration will be exciting as two worlds collide to form a new great experience. We as the Amabhinca nation always wanted to be part of the Durban July without filtering our culture. We finally have our new home at the Hollywood Bets Durban July,” said Lindani Gumede, director of Fast and Quick Consulting, the brains behind the Durban July Amabhinca concept.

Zulu said guests will be given a curated experience featuring maskandi artists dressed in modern interpretations of traditional wear, performing against a backdrop of opulent Afrocentric décor, haute cuisine, and luxury hospitality.

“We are 80% sold and I am sure by the end of the weekend we will be sold out. Food-wise, guests will be given a fusion of all tastes that speak Mzansi culture from spicy Indian dishes to rich Zulu traditional tastes.”

The Pegasus Lounge is situated on the edge of the track, with a glass-fronted marquee built on a raised deck to give guests “a premium hospitality experience”. The facility includes an open-air courtyard with live entertainment as well as an outside viewing deck of the race track.

R6,900 per person excluding VAT will buy guests a spot at the marquee, offering different hospitality experiences, including a private lounge for 30 people or more and private and shared tables for 10 people.

The package includes plush décor, access to private viewing balconies overlooking the home straight of the racetrack, an upscale three-course buffet lunch and bespoke bar facilities.

Zandile Dlamini, spokesperson for Hollywood Bets, sponsor of the event, said, “The Durban July is more than just a race — it’s a full cultural experience, where the public will truly feel the pulse and the essence of this lifestyle event.

“Beyond the races and live music, attendees can expect dazzling fashion displays, gourmet hospitality experiences, and vibrant social energy that has made the Durban July a highlight on the national calendar

“We’re thrilled to present an entertainment lineup that celebrates the best of South African music and adds another layer of magic to an already iconic event

Zolani Mahola will perform the national anthem, while the crowd will be entertained by Mafikizolo, Lira, GoodLuck and DJ Dalootz, among others.
