In less than a week, registered voters will decide who will govern their municipalities.

More than 26-million voters are registered for these elections.

In an interview with Sunday Times Daily, independent electoral analyst Dawie Scholtz unpacked some of the reasons why this year’s local government elections are particularly significant.

There are new political parties formed by prominent leaders contesting in local government elections for the first time.

Patricia de Lille leads the GOOD party. Before forming the party, she was in the DA as mayor of Cape Town.

Herman Mashaba is leading ActionSA. He was also in the DA as mayor of Johannesburg.

Former DA leader Mmusi Maimane’s One SA Movement, which is made up of independents, is also contesting in the elections.

Why are these elections significant in our current sociopolitical climate?
