1928 — Sidney Atkinson, runner-up four years earlier, wins the 110m hurdles gold at the Amsterdam Olympics with fellow South African George Weightman-Smith ending fifth. Weightman-Smith — 21st in his second event, the javelin throw — took the lead briefly early in the race, but Atkinson delivered the best kick to clinch the win ahead of Americans Steve Anderson and John Collier.
1998 — Mzukisi Sikali, the SA junior-flyweight champion, steps up two divisions to win the marginal WBU junior-bantamweight belt by stopping Luigi Castiglione in the eighth round in Acona, Italy. That was the only stoppage defeat of the Italian’s career.
2009 — Flyhalf Morne Steyn scores all his side’s points as the Springboks down the All Blacks 31-19 in a Tri-Nations match in Durban. Steyn scored SA’s only try and also put over the conversion as well as eight penalties. The Kiwis also scored a single try.
2009 — Isaac Hlatshwayo wins the vacant IBF welterweight crown when he outpoints Delvin Rodrigues of the Dominican Republic in Uncasville, Connecticut.
2018 — Quinton de Kock strikes 87 runs off 78 balls as the Proteas beat Sri Lanka by four wickets in the second ODI in Dambulla. Lungi Ngidi and Andile Phehlukwayo took three wickets each to limit the home side to 244/8. SA won in the 43rd over to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
