Du Plessis — who made his debut against Australia in 1971 — had taken over the captaincy against France in 1975. Under his leadership the Boks won 13 of 15 Tests, including series triumphs against the All Blacks in 1976 and the British Lions in 1980. Mercurial winger Gerrie Germishuys, who scored seven tries in nine Tests that year, was one of South Africa’s five try-scorers against France, who dotted down only once. Three penalties by flyhalf Derick Hougaard was all South Africa could manage as they went down 9-29 in Melbourne. Of the 18 matches he was at the helm, South Africa won seven games.
