Ivan Zimmerman follows his heart on life's adventure

Actor Ivan Zimmerman, known for his roles in '7deLan' and 'Egoli' talks about his cycling trip from Cairo to Cape Town and the adventures planned through his 'Leaders Never Quit' initiative What did you want to be when growing up?A pilot and a Lego designer.What did your childhood teach you about money?Money should be saved.What was your first job? How did you manage?I had three jobs over a weekend as a scholar. I would work at Edgars on a Saturday morning until 1pm. I would then work at a video shop from 1.30 to 5.30, after which I would wait tables at Spur until late.story_article_left1What steered you into the career you have today?The passing of my father had a huge impact on what I really wanted to do with my life. I also got a pacemaker when I was 28, due to sarcoidosis.Over the 10 years after that it had a huge influence on my life - psychologically as well as physically.I think it took me 10 years to realise that I am slightly more fragile than the average person.What do you most enjoy about your career today?The diversity. Funny, but I find myself doing three jobs again.I act when there is work and I am available. I am a marketer for a company called innermation sa that specialises in training and education. And then I run a programme called Leaders Never Quit.It is a co-operation with the South African Institute for Chartered Accountants that is a motivational programme for young and old in which I take on extreme adventures and lead through example. I have just finished cycling from Cairo to Cape Town. The next adventure will be a world first which will be announced soon. After that I will cycle from Beijing to Istanbul and then South America, from north to south.What are you currently up to in terms of your career?Planning the next motivational adventure for Leaders Never Quit. Planning is very important.story_article_right2Do you have any role models in business and life?Stefan Vermaak [CEO for innermation sa] is a role model for me. I also get a lot of insight from reading inspirational books. I like Richard Branson's attitude.If you hit the jackpot today, what would you do with the money?Invest it wisely, travel a lot and keep on trying to inspire people though programmes like Leaders Never Quit.Do you have any money weaknesses or indulgence?No.What has been your best investments in life?Life itself. Living it.What advice would you give younger people when choosing what they want to do in life?Follow your heart. Be realistic. Focus. And prepare for your dreams...
