Call to almost double funds spent on higher education

The government should allocate an additional R30-billion annually towards universities and colleges, a policy and research expert said as fresh student protests this week again highlighted the difficulties many face when it comes to paying fees. At 6.2% of GDP, South Africa's overall spending on education is considered competitive by international standards.
