Platinum riches tear tribes apart

Marikana, in the middle of the platinum belt, will be remembered as the site of the most horrendous massacre in the post-apartheid era, where more than 30 miners were killed fighting for better wages. But Jan Kgomo and Lawrence Mmekwa, who have lived in the area for most of their lives, remember Marikana in the '60s, before mining, as a place where they grew up herding their parents' cattle.
