Manufacturing can rectify import-export imbalance

Trade liberalisation and structural adjustment programmes in sub-Saharan Africa in the late '80s were on balance supportive of exports and economic growth in the region.

However, various studies also find that while trade liberalisation has benefited Africa's export growth, it has also led to imports outpacing exports, precipitating periods of trade imbalance, particularly when commodity prices decline.
