In job interviews, you, and the company, are unknown quantities, but when you are up for promotion, the interview takes a different form. Lyndy van den Barselaar, MD of recruitment company ManpowerGroup South Africa, warns that an "internal interview should be viewed with as much seriousness as an interview for a new job, as it could mean a new stepping stone on your career path". She has this advice: • Make sure your CV is up to date; • Even before you decide to try for a promotion, show your managers that you are up to the task by taking on more responsibilities. "To increase your connections with others outside your immediate department, start networking within your company - and take on some lateral responsibilities where you can," she says; • In the interview, talk about how your roles and responsibilities have changed while you have been there.
