A legendary theory from the 1920s has it that hemlines on women’s dresses rise when economies are healthy — partly explaining the advent of the miniskirt in the 1960s — and fall when times are hard.

Over the decades, research has shown, the match has been fairly close, but with a lag of about three years. That probably means we can expect dresses to be dragging along the ground as we hit 2023. But there is another correlation that we may well see emerge from the global Covid-19 crisis. ..
