A church in India closed its doors for a week after a couple were found having sex on its porch.

The unmarried couple was discovered two weeks ago by a church elder, who caught them in the act at the United Pentecostal Church in Mizoram, northeast India.

After a week, the church was opened following a board meeting with the elders who made the decision to pardon the couple for their "profanity in the name of God".

Most church denominations in the state regard premarital sex as a grievous sin and consider the act as blasphemous and a desecration.

Churches in the area have been dismantled due to couples being intimate on the premises.

These churches were only opened after rebuilding and a cleansing process.

But the United Pentecostal Church decided not to demolish the building because the couple were having sex on the porch and not inside the building.

The church has been open again for services.
