Former journalist and Port Elizabeth councillor Terry Herbst, 80, has died of a heart attack.

Herbst worked at The Herald and the Cape Times.

He was known as an avid campaigner and, in 2000, published his book, The Bisho Letters: A Challenge to Thabo Mbeki, comprising 550 letters he had sent to authorities to expose corruption in the Eastern Cape.

He is survived by two sisters.
