The principles and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi are to be preserved in a multimillion-rand memorial centre in Durban, it was announced this week.

The Indian government and the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government, have agreed to pump R2.5-million into the project, which is being spearheaded by the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Trust.

The centre will be in Prince Edward Street, on land bought by Gandhi in 1897 and now owned by the Gandhi trust.

The project is intended to facilitate the exchange of ideas between pupils from KwaZulu-Natal and India.

The centre will also highlight the philosophy and principles of other African leaders such as Nobel prize-winner Chief Albert Luthuli, Pan-Africanist Nkwame Nkrumah, Tanzanian leader Julius Nyerere and Mozambique's Samora Machel.
