This image by John Liebenberg is part of a dazzling collection of about 80 pictures going on auction tomorrow evening.

The event, to be held at Stephan Welz & Co in Rosebank, Johannesburg, is to raise money to pay for Liebenberg's hip-replacement surgery.

The more than 50 photographers who have contributed works include David Goldblatt, Jodi Bieber and Sunday Times staffers Simphiwe Nkwali, James Oatway, Raymond Preston and Herbert Mabuza.

The auction will start at 6.30pm and has attracted the attention of collectors and galleries internationally.

It is "an invaluable South African visual archive of life, death, politics and society", said co-organiser Jonathon Rees.

There is a preview today from 9am to noon.
