Champagne flowed, vibey music rang out and hors d'oeuvres were devoured as Durban's poshest party boat cruised off for a night of dining and dancing.

There was one thing all the glamorous guests had in common: they had come aboard the five-star La Vue to celebrate important dates in their lives, be it a birthday or an anniversary.

The stylish double-decker boat, with its two bars, sophisticated dining areas and - most importantly for the party animals on board - a dance floor, roared to life at precisely 7.30pm for a two-and-a-half-hour journey that left many guests in awe of the striking view of the city from the water.

The latest addition to Durban's harbour launched during the festive season last year.

Even before dinner was served, the snazzy passengers - the women in pretty cocktail dresses and the men in smart casual gear - were busting moves on the dance floor as a two-man band belted out popular hits.

Dinner came in courses from meze starter platters to a choice of beef fillet, Mediterranean chicken or a vegetable crepe for the main course, and a chocolate and berry delight for dessert.

Sandy Wingfield, elegant in a black-and-white striped dress, surprised her husband Wade with the R695-a-head experience for his birthday.

The birthday boy, although suitably impressed, was overheard saying: "It's slightly steep, these prices, but great for a special occasion."

Nolundi Mncwango, who turned heads in her flowing kaftan, was eager to bring her family aboard after hearing about the experience in Johannesburg.

On the upper deck, a 21st birthday party was in full swing for Kayleen Pillay, who was surprised by her father Lazarus's choice of venue.

"It's actually a really cool venue ... I'm thrilled to celebrate my milestone birthday in real style," she cooed.

The party continued even after La Vue docked, when shooters were downed - and the electric slide made an appearance.
