Rotten meat, horses and butt burgers - five of the grossest fast food scandals

The KFC Braamfontein scandal isn't even the worst of the lot.

We’ve all seen the pics and read the stories about KFC Braamfontein’s “meat on the floor” scandal (gross). But what other fast food scandals have happened in the past few years? Here are 5 that could make you reconsider your takeaway dinner…

1. The McDonald's "pink slime"

You don't even need to watch the video to know that this is just gross. A 2009 New York Times story introduced the public to “pink slime”, which is officially referred to as “lean finely textured beef”. What is it? Finely-ground beef and beef cuttings that, when coming out of the factory dispensers looks like a gooey, skinned snake.

2. Horsemeat in your Big Whopper

No, that’s not sexual innuendo. Remember the horsemeat scandal of two years ago? Well some of the world’s fast food chains got dragged into it. Both Taco Bell and Burger King admitted that horse meat had made it into some of their foods. According to The Guardian, Burger King found “very small trace levels” of horsemeat at their factory in Ireland, but that the food at outlets had tested negative for horsemeat. Uh-huh. Another thing: a Burger King employee in Japan got fired for rubbing his butt all over the buns.

3. Raw quarter pounder at McDs

In February, a man in Northampton, UK, ordered a quarter pounder and upon biting into it, realised it was raw. Yep, that’s right: a raw meat burger. Click here to see the pic.

4. More food from the floor at KFC (and McD’s)

Yep, it’s not just the folks at KFC Braamfontein who are guilty of this. Last year, McDonald’s and KFC were in hot water after video footage surfaced of workers picking up meat from a factory floor in China. It gets worse: it was also found that the supplier mixed fresh meat with expired meat. Come on.

5. Subway’s rotten meat

Earlier this year Subway was in hot water after it turned out workers in Shanghai were serving customers meat, drinks and veggies that were past their expiration date. And it’s not like the workers weren’t aware of this: they apparently deliberately changed the expiry dates on products, just in case someone decided to check. Gross.
