X-rays in the cloud a symbol of the future‚ says Makhura

Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital has rolled out a new IT system to ensure all digital X-rays‚ MRI and CAT scans are kept in the digital cloud. It was launched on Wednesday morning by Gauteng Premier David Makhura and MEC for health Quedani Mahlangu. The system will save time wasted printing X-rays‚ which will in turn cut patients’ waiting times‚ as well as allow doctors to view X-rays from anywhere in the hospital on their iPads.Radiologists can also log into the system remotely to interpret X-rays or give a second opinion to doctors at the hospital.Time-savings are essential to dealing with staff shortages‚ said Makhura. The R50-million rand system will pay for itself as it eliminates the cost of film‚ which currently sets Charlotte Maxeke back an estimated R1.5-million a month. It will also mean that patients no longer have to lug X-rays between hospitals or be sent for repeat scans‚ and those patients being transferred between hospitals won’t have to worry about their records getting lost. The latter is often a problem when the Department of Health is hauled to court.“This system is a symbol of the hospital of the future‚” said Makhura.
