Homes in Somerset West were evacuated overnight and on Wednesday morning as fires continued to rage‚ fuelled by a strong south-easter wind. Many residents from the area worked themselves to a “standstill” as fires wreaked havoc.

The fires are “mostly contained” and authorities have evacuated three complexes above Sir Lowry's Village and at least four farms. (Justin Sullivan Photography)
