Head of video for TimesLIVE/The Times + Sunday Times

Times Media is looking for an experienced person to lead the editorial output of our countrywide team of multimedia journalists. This position is Johannesburg-based.
The chosen candidate will run the daily video news production and publishing for our integrated TimesLIVE, The Times and Sunday Times newsroom; identify visual angles in our daily news coverage; and help digital and print journalists tell stories differently through multimedia.
Candidates need at least five years’ experience in a digital or broadcast newsroom and in-depth knowledge of delivering video content to a South African audience.
The head of video will report directly to the head of multimedia and contribute towards the overall Times Media video strategy.
Requirements
• Relevant experience with a love for video.
• At least five years’ experience in an editorial role.
• A track record of success and a drive to succeed in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
• Strong knowledge of best practice for digital video production and use of video analytics to engage audiences.
• Must be fully proficient in Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent software.
Primary tasks
• Manage the video news team’s daily output by leading editorial and diary meetings and directing journalists to capture engaging video content in breaking news situations.
• Manage the publication and distribution of video content across the Times Media network with an eye on quality, not quantity.
• Monitor the news cycle and provide Times Media’s news platforms with relevant video content.
• Run the editorial operations key to developing news video for Times Media’s digital platforms.
• Carry out duties in line with the editorial guidelines and ethics of Times Media.
Essential skills
• Substantial relevant practical experience showcasing quality video production techniques and a grasp of current video technologies and analytics.
• First-class news judgment and a comprehensive understanding of South African current affairs, social issues and trends.
• An understanding of digital video journalism and thorough knowledge of social media platforms, ecosystems and new technologies and products.
• Excellent leadership and communication skills and a grasp of newsroom operations and workflows.
• The ability to assess new information and react quickly to editorial developments.
• The ability to work long, flexible hours and adapt to changing priorities.
