Winter is here. After several seasons of anticipation, Game of Thrones will finally deliver the cold, cruel winter we've all been waiting for. Season 7 of the show hits global screens tonight/tomorrow, three months later than the normal season premiere date - and we couldn't be more ready.
Violence as a storytelling technique is nothing new. Game of Thrones has employed this tactic since the beginning to maximum effect.
While we didn't need to see Oberyn Martell have his skull crushed by the Mountain, I do think we needed to see Robb Stark's body riddled with arrows and his heavily pregnant wife being stabbed repeatedly in the stomach during the infamous Red Wedding.
The Freys did not come to play: they wanted revenge and they wanted to wipe out the Starks.
But what we don't need to see is women being violated time and again...
