What I'm watching: Craig Freimond, writer & film director

We get the lowdown on what entertains the man behind 'Beyond the River' and 'Material'

Craig Freimond is a writer and director of film, television and theatre. He has made four feature films: Gums & Noses, Jozi, Material and Beyond the River.
He tells us more about his TV-watching habits:
The first show I remember bingeing on was the Sopranos. It was quite unlike any series I had seen before when the main character was a gangster trying to be a good man and deal with his family. I loved the style, the writing and the performances.
I never watch series week by week. I generally use the online platforms to watch because that's what they work really well for. I am finishing off the second series of Happy Valley, which I really like. Next on the list are The Fall and Fargo season three. I recently watched the original Danish series of The Killing.
I usually watch things based on recommendations from people I know. Otherwise I watch new series of ones that I have enjoyed before such as Happy Valley or Fargo. Sometimes I take a random look at new online series on Netflix. That's one of the advantages of online platforms - all the content is there.
I'd like to see more local content represented on online platforms. SA is not benefiting from this explosion of high-end television. We are not investing enough in this kind of product for us to compete. The Scandinavians have become experts in crime series in societies that have very little crime. We have extraordinary crime stories but we are not telling them.
We're shooting a sequel to Material soon. I am also working on high-end drama series - trying to explore the international market...
