Charlize Theron is bold and dangerous in 'Atomic Blonde'

Get past the '80s music video feel and it's very watchable, says Matthew Vice

I might be a child of the 1980s, although I was mostly too young to appreciate the pop culture of the decade - if "appreciate" '80s culture is what you're sincerely supposed to do, and people who do this aren't engaging in piss-taking.
That's the only way I can explain it to myself, because the fads of the era make me cringe. I mention this because I recently saw Atomic Blonde, a spy-themed action thriller set in the 1980s during the end of the Cold War.
It is based on a graphic novel, The Coldest City by Anthony Johnston and Sam Hart. Charlize Theron apparently got an advance copy before it was printed. She loved it and for years entertained the idea of making a movie adaptation.
The film opens with a bizarre segue featuring stock footage of US President Ronald Reagan's 1987 "Tear down this wall" speech in West Berlin, followed by text message informing us "this is not that story".
