FNB Art Prize winner Peju Alatise taps into the creative to break barriers
The 2017 winner of the FNB Art Prize addresses issues of society, politics and gender in her work
"Strong" and "intense" are two adjectives that have been used to describe the work of Nigerian artist Peju Alatise, 2017 winner of the prestigious FNB Art Prize.
In an interview with Al-Jazeera, the mixed-medium artist, poet and writer said: "I never got into art, I was always an artist. I always loved to paint, I always loved to draw and make things. My interest was always in being creative."
Alatise's work addresses issues of society, politics and gender. She exhibited at the 57th Venice Biennale and was the 2016 fellow at the Smithsonian Institute of African Art.
She will create a new project to be exhibited at the 10th annual FNB JoburgArtFair.
Previous winners of the FNB Art Prize include Nolan Oswald Dennis and Kudzanai Chiurai.
