What I'm watching: actor & musician Nakhane Touré

The star of 'The Wound', South Africa's official entry for 2018's Foreign Language Academy Award, tells us which series he finds irresistible

The first show I remember binge watching was Will & Grace. I had caught an episode of it on TV and thought it was hilarious.
I suppose what got me hooked were the jibes, the quick wit and its queer characters. I had never seen a series that had queer characters in leading roles before. But not only that, they had real lives, had real desires, made real mistakes.
I'm a creature of habit and obsession. So I still watch an episode of Will & Grace before I sleep.
I also watch a series called It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia. Great satire.
I don't get caught up by what everyone is watching. One of my problems is that I truly don't have a fear of missing out. I tell myself that what others are watching will not go away. But sometimes something sounds so interesting I seek it out, for example Transparent. I like fallible characters.
South Africa is such a diverse country. It has so many strange and wonderful stories that need to be told. We just need to be honest with ourselves, we need to dig deep and write about what we're most afraid of.
One of the most disheartening things about this world is that it never stops. It never allows you to press "pause". Something is always happening. But it's incredible for storytellers; there's always something new. People who were kept silent for hundreds of years are finding their voices and we are hearing their stories.
I have an EP coming out this week. I'm performing in London at the Rich Mix on October 29. Then I am the artist in residence at a French festival called Transmusicales. I create a show in a theatre and perform it for five nights! And, finally, a new album is coming out in February...
