Flugelhorns are made from brass or silver. And it's said to be a little trickier to exploit than a trumpet due to its stumpy length and quirky three instead of four-piston valves. Largely pitched at B-minor, the flugelhorn's tone is chubbier, sombre and mellower. Numerous global jazztets have used it to great effect and famous players are Ronnie Wilson of the Gap Band, Miles Davis and our recently dearly departed Hugh Masekela. Notably, flugelhornists can easily switch to the more agile trumpet just as Bra Hugh commonly did.

Bra Hugh's Stimela is my favourite. It speaks to my entire sensorium; the mechanical sounds of a steam locomotive, the bangs; the choo-choo-choo-choos and the whistle are re-enacted in perfect scat singing and the flugelhorn brings in the gloomy atmosphere of the scenes. It's one of his profound musical works.

Similarly with some vehicle brands, their mechanical musicality perfects the experience. In our unique way, we honour the great Bra Hugh with a list of the most aurally blessed vehicles out there for those with an inner flugelmeister.

1. MERCEDES

Aside from their racetrack DNA blended with luxury, the caboodle of almost 50 AMG models are serious howlers, from the rapturous A45 to the AMG GT-R which has a bellow akin to a Balrog - JR Tolkien's fearsome beast. All mark their road presence with a spellbinding bark.

2. LAMBORGHINI

These iconic Italian aerofoils have never been initiated on the perks of silence. From the Miura to the modern-day Aventador and Huracàn ranges, all have flippantly violent but oh-so-good-to-hear decibels.

3. ASTON MARTIN

V12 engines have a graceful but ferocious timbre. We can't say the same of the Vantage V8s though.

4. MASERATI

You'd imagine that any noise engineer from Maserati has to retain the musicality of the brand presented beautifully in the Quattroporte. It's down a few bars, a distinctly dark, melodious and alto-like wail halfway between a flugelhorn and a trumpet.

5. AUDI

Audi has created some prolific shouters over the years and the R8 V10-Plus is the principal soloist. However, nothing under R1-million matches the sonorous, disarming wail of the multi-award winning five-cylinder engine fitted to the TT RS and Audi RS3s at full tilt.

6. JAGUAR LAND ROVER

British aristocracy merged with the colourfully violent and unbridled anger of a strung-out supercharged V8. It's less Johnny English and more Vinny Jones in reply. For immediate audible reference, seek out XK RS; Range Rover Sport and F-Type SVR.
