Spy thriller 'Red Sparrow' has more twists than a racetrack

Jennifer Laurence plays a ballerina-turned-reluctant-spy in this entertainingly cerebral jaunt through Eastern Europe

Spies. Like corporeal ghosts they move among us, toppling leaders from their dictatorial shelves and shifting things without being seen. They are unicorns of deceit - everyone has heard of them but few have actually seen one.
The mystery they are (necessarily) shrouded in makes them excellent cinematic subject matter, as proven by Red Sparrow.
Kicking off in modern-day Russia, the film follows prima ballerina Dominika Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence) whose career comes to a bone-splitting end after her dance partner jumps on her shin on stage.
Bereft of usefulness to her company, and with a sick mother to look after, Egorova stares a bleak future in the eye. Knowing her predicament, her lecherous uncle, the deputy director of a Russian intelligence agency, offers her salvation in return for a favour.
