My Perfect Weekend

How sports presenter Vaylen Kirtley spends her weekends

This TV personality favourite thing about the weekend is that the pressure to go to bed early is off

Saturdays are such a treat because the alarm clock doesn't go off. I have always loved the morning so even though I don't have to be up early for the show, I still tend to be out of bed by 7am - just in time for ParkRun.
My local one is so festive and most people bring their dogs along. If you have sensitive ears then it's probably not your idea of fun - the symphony of woofs, barks and squeals is quite something.
Once I've done the requisite 5km, it's time for breakfast and the weekend has officially begun.
Most sports games and matches happen over the weekend, so if I am not covering a sporting event, then I am watching it, fitting in the matches between family outings.
I absolutely love the weekend evenings. They're definitely the best part of my downtime because the pressure to go to sleep early is off and I can spend time with friends later into the night.
Depending on the season, I'll spend my weekend evenings snuggling up on the couch with a fire in the grate and watching the important match of the season or a documentary.
In the warm Highveld summer, I spend weekend evenings hosting friends at my place with my daughter, friends and family.
I love spicy food and spending time with loved ones, so the menu is usually a no-fuss meal that is generally quite healthy and colourful and always good for sharing. My best dish to make when people come over is Nachos - fully loaded with lots of secret ingredients and homemade guacamole. It's such a simple meal, but so effective when the idea is to eat, be merry and spend time together.
I love to spend some downtime reading and I have a wide variety of books, from sports autobiographies to books by Malcolm Gladwell. I also love the classics like Catch 22. But there is one problem - the clock. There's just not enough time for them all!
My music taste is as eclectic as my choice of books. From instrumental to house music, I need a wide variety because I love lots of different genres. There's always something playing at the house or in the car. Every moment in life has to have a soundtrack!
Television is my dear friend for live sports games and documentaries. I love the History Channel and National Geographic. I have one series in particular that recently captured my attention and it has my daughter and me hooked. It's called The Flash. Everyone loves a superhero, no matter how old you are.
The weekend is also for rest, and I prepare for the week ahead by catching up on as much sleep as I can. I will also take some time on a Sunday evening to go through my diary for the week ahead to plan what needs to be done on different days.
And just before bed I always pray and check about 10 times that my alarm is actually on...
