Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp and Messenger temporarily shut down on Wednesday, leaving many social media users in a frenzy. 

The social media platforms encountered problems mainly affecting parts of Europe and the Americas and parts of Asia as well as Australia, according to downdetector.com. 

Facebook took to Twitter to address the matter that they are working on fixing problems. 

Many users complained that they could not log into the apps, post or comment on the social media platforms.

According to BBC, Facebook, which has about 2.3-billion users, last experienced an outage of this magnitude in 2008.

The company took to Twitter on to announce that problems Instagram have been resolved and that app was up and running. 

The outage caused panic and frustration among users who could not access the platforms. User took to Twitter as #FacebookDown and #InstagramDown trended with a pinch of humour.
