Maverick director Michael Haneke's first French film is now 21 years old but its examination of the alienation, racism and rage that boils under the respectable façade of Paris seems even more relevant and gut-wrenching now. Starring Juliette Binoche, it's an increasingly psychologically horrific examination of the ripple effects of one seemingly banal incident on the lives of those who witness and participate in it. The film asks big questions about who we really are and how we construct our social identities in relation to those around us.
