END OF THE ROAD

Queen Latifah and Ludacris star in this high action, black American, racial horror spin on the classic road-trip-from-hell thriller. A woman, her brother and two children head off on a cross-country journey to a new life, but their plans are scuttled after they witness a murder and must run for their lives.

THE THIEF, HIS WIFE AND THE CANOE

The black-humoured but empathetic dramatisation of a true story that captured headlines in 2007. Debt-ridden “everyman” John Darwin, with the healp of his wife, faked his death in an apparent canoeing accident and then turned up five and a half years later thinking he could fake amnesia to explain everything to the satisfaction of authorities. Starring the always excellent Eddie Marsan and Monica Dolan as the Darwins, it’s a measured attempt to understand a story so crazy it could only be true.

GEORGE CARLIN'S AMERICAN DREAM

The holy trinity of American stand-up comedians who turned the genre from entertainment into uncomfortable, but important social reflection is made up of Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor and the focus of this extensive two-part docuseries, George Carlin. Tracing Carlin’s journey from popular, strait-laced 1960s TV comedy star to sharp, provocative dissector of the fallacies of the American dream in the 1970s and his later even angrier old man reinvention in the 1980s, it’s a fascinating tribute to a true American original whose legacy remains undeniable almost 15 years after his death.

David Simon returns to his beloved Baltimore. Based on the non-fiction book by journalist Justin Fenton and starring Jon Bernthal, it’s a layered and sprawling multi-character narrative about the scourge of corruption within the police department and the investigation that brought the perpetrators to justice.
