These terrifying swimsuits are taking over the Internet

Whacky designs like the Hairy Chest and Trump swimming costume might actually be a stroke of genius, writes Elizabeth Sleith

So we’ve passed the winter solstice and summer’s on its way. Yay.
But just when you thought it was safe to start planning what to wear when you go back in the water, a US clothing company has invented the most terrifying swimming costumes the world has ever seen — and people love them.
California-based Beloved Shirts has a range of quirky designs printed on T-shirts and sweatshirts too.
As they explain on their website, the shock factor is their raison d’être.
"We sell apparel that warrants a reaction. It's a conversation starter."
They even have an adult onesie designed to make the wearer look like a giant package of instant noodles.
But it's the Hairy Chest Swimsuit that is getting the most attention. Yes, it's for women and, well, the name is self-explanatory.
There are also other weird items, such as unnerving, extreme close-ups of unlikely famous faces - including Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Nicolas Cage.
At first glance, we were just as baffled as you are.
But the fuss about them online has also engendered an interesting debate. Many women are trying them out and saying they felt weirdly confident wearing them in public. That too was the creator's thinking. "Nobody asked for a one-piece swimsuit with a very hairy man's chest printed on it. But, the thing is, sometimes you just can't put what you want in words," the site explains.
"Like all of our designs, we wanted this suit to be an instant conversation starter, a wearable ice-breaker.
"And our customers are interpreting it in the most awesome way. From warding off weirdos at the beach, to challenging the idea of the 'perfect summer body', no matter how you wear it, it's sure to get people talking."
Maybe what we have here is the Holy Grail of swimwear - the one that flatters all body types.
No matter what, absolutely no one will be looking at anyone's thighs...
