More blurry, more two-dimensional and definitely more playful: Classic beauty staples make a modern comeback

THE ICON: The Smoky Eye
Jet black, highly pigmented and almost panda-like, the classic smoky eye is the symbol of rock-star status.
THE NEW CLASSIC:
The new smoky eye is still ultra smoked out but is applied only up to the crease instead of over the whole eye, and is not confined to black shadow.
TIP 1: Use approachable jewel hues such as deep emerald, chocolate brown or purples to give the smoky eye a modern appeal.
TIP 2: A smoky eye doesn't have to consume the whole eyelid surface. Use a kohl liner to rim the upper and lower lash line and smudge out the colour until there's only a sheer halo of colour left.
TIP 3: Blend a powder eye shadow into the crease of the eye and keep the eyelid clean for a modern, inverted smoky eye.
5 of the best:THE ICON: The Blushed cheek
The apple of the cheeks were never seen without a flush of angelic pink blush to warm them up. The placement of blush is everything as the new way to sculpt has a fluid approach.
THE NEW CLASSIC:
Sculpted and super sheer; a mixture of principles from contouring and colour draping, blush takes a step back as a focal point on the face and becomes a suggestion of colour.
TIP 1: Focus the application of blush from the temple and work the colour towards the hollows and apples to create a gradation that adds depth to the cheek.
TIP 2: Candy pink blushes had their place in the '80s, but the updated blush falls within the colour spectrum of dusty pinks, terracotta and deep purples in creamy formulations.
TIP 3: The updated blush isn't shy and loves to be everywhere; from the cheeks and eyelids to the bridge of the nose.
5 of the best:THE ICON: The black liner
Sophia Loren did it best and it became the trademark of all vixens. Inky black, feline and flicked sharp like a razor - the bold, precise liner has gone off duty.
THE NEW CLASSIC:
Graphic and unrestrained. No longer restricted to the lash line or an era, the new black liner can run along waterlines, the crease of the eye and even the brow bone - the more graphic, the better.
TIP 1: Create a futuristic appeal to the feline winged liner by flicking the liner upwards just after mid lash instead of at the corner of the eye.
TIP 2: Take a beauty master class from Twiggy and apply a streak of gel liner in the crease of the eye or floating just above for a look that is subtly graphic.
TIP 3: Reverse the roles and apply gel or kohl liner to the lower lash line, leaving the line completely unsmudged.
5 of the best:THE ICON: The red lip
Made famous by Hollywood darlings like Marylin Munroe, the red lip has always been the ultimate statement of both power and femininity.
THE NEW CLASSIC:
Although still associated with power and assertiveness, the red lip has become more playful and doesn't take itself too seriously.
TIP 1: Ditch the lip liner and sport a lip that may feather at the edges but is still punchy with colour.
TIP 2: Put your true red on the back-burner and replace it with a fuchsia-based red or a cherry red that feels lighter but still makes a big impact.
TIP 3: The two-toned, just-bitten look is still trending and plays well with red. Blur a cherry or true red lipstick all over the lips with a finger and apply a burgundy red on the centre of the lips.Stockists:..
