WHY YOU'LL LOVE THEM

They're bold, unique and wondrous. They like to keep people guessing about how they actually make their beautiful pieces - especially where the diamonds are "magically" suspended in resin.

THEIR AESTHETIC

Handmade contemporary "art" jewellery.

TINSEL

THE BRANDS YOU'LL LOVE

Twenty local contemporary jewellers including Geraldine Fenn, Liz Loubser, Erika Wessels, Nanette Veldsman, Inge Marais, Nicky Savage, Songezo Baleni and Frieda Luhl.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE THEM

Each designer has a different style and uses different techniques and materials, so there is a huge variety on display. Pieces are made from good-quality precious materials and are generally unique. You can buy a pair of handmade silver earrings for under R500.

The designers are happy to make bespoke pieces, so you can have something designed and made specially for you.

THEIR AESTHETIC

All pieces are handmade by the designers themselves so you know where they come from. Nothing is mass produced and stock is permanently available.

In addition, designers participate in several exhibitions of contemporary jewellery every year. Some are solo shows (such as the exhibition opening this Saturday, called Tidal, by Anna Raimondo) and some combine work from several jewellers and incorporate work from artists and designers in other disciplines, like illustration or fashion.

WHERE TO FIND THEM

11 Cecilia Avenue, Risidale (near Linden), Johannesburg. Visit tinselgallery.com (look out for their new online store launching in June).
