THE TREND: PASTEL HAIR COLOURS

Pastel hair is nothing new in the beauty world but thanks to the Marc Jacobs Spring 2019 show, it has peaked and solidified its presence both on and off the runway. Models were given individualised dye jobs of the softest pastel hues, ranging from powder blue to peach sorbet, leaving audiences mesmerised.

The "princess pastel" trend suits everyone and is also perfect for those who might not be confident about colour. These days, washes of pastel have as much commitment as you want them to have.

Whether you choose to add a full head of permanent colour, wear highlights or employ the genius of a spray-on wash-out hue for the weekend, it's the new way to be an instant beauty chameleon.

GET THE LOOK

1. PICK THE RIGHT SHADE FOR YOUR SKIN TONE

As a rule of thumb, cooler tones such as blues, greens and purples pop against a darker skin tone, while fairer skin tones should try soft pinks, corals and violets.

2. SEEK PRO ASSISTANCE AT THE SALON

For some people the thought of experimenting with hair colour is enough to send them into a cold sweat. Luckily, with so many advances in hair colour, dyeing your locks doesn't have to end in a horror story. If you're considering a more permanent method of achieving candy colours, consult a professional as the first step.

While natural blondes can make the transition to pastel far easier, those with darker hair require colour lifting using bleach. In this case, seeking professional assistance can be the difference between ending up with a handful of bleach-damaged hair and the hue of your dreams.

Candice Wyatt-Minter, founder of Wyatt Hairdressing, advises: "When deciding on a hair colour, keep in mind that it may take multiple appointments at the salon to achieve the desired look. You should be asking your hairdresser what maintenance is involved, what to take home with you, and when should you return for your next appointment. It is also important to discuss your budget with your hairdresser, for the appointment on the day and for future appointments."

3. MAINTAIN AT HOME

Now that you have splurged on getting the perfect pastel shade, at-home maintenance is what keeps it the gift that keeps on giving.

Make sure you always use a shampoo and conditioner that is specific for colour-treated hair. This will not only preserve your chosen shade for longer but will help prevent hair breakage or brittleness.

Colour-treated hair tends to be dry and porous so indulge in a repairing, hydrating hair mask bi-weekly, or bond strengthening treatments to intensely treat hair and keep it looking healthy.
