Meet Cindy Mfabe, the winner of the SA Fashion Week New Talent Search

24 March 2019 - 00:00 By Nothemba Mkhondo

The debut collection by Cindy Mfabe, the recent winner of the SA Fashion Week New Talent Search, redefined modern femininity through contemporary portraiture.
Mfabe says she took her inspiration from a series of portraits by South African painters. "I focused on the subjects' stillness and calmness, despite the chaos that surrounded them. Throughout the collection I tried to capture juxtaposition by creating designs with exciting details while maintaining the overall minimalist feeling," she explains.
We asked Mfabe to share a few of her favourite things and tell us about the fashion finds she's currently coveting.
I am currently listening to Kwesta Dakar II, R125, Takealot.
My favourite thing in my closet is my pair of Nike Air Huarache sneakers, R1,297, Nike - simply because I am always at the gym.
If money were not an issue I would buy Lionel Smit's painting Disappear.
The beauty products I'm loving are African black soap, a good toner and cleansing milk by Eucerin 200ml, R164. I also love Eucerin Sunscreen SPF 50 50ml, R250.
My favourite fragrances are Angel 50ml EDT, R1,179, and Alien 30ml EDT, R1,080, both by Thierry Mugler.
I am reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert T Kiyosaki R109, Takealot.
I would love to collaborate with South African design duo MmusoMaxwell. They stand out for me. Their pieces feel new and fresh and they have great pattern engineering. They represent what fashion is about now.
My favourite designer is Delpozo. I love their design aesthetics and explosive use of colour. Oh, and their pattern engineering is just so effortless.
I love the Victoria Islands in Nigeria. The island is so vibrant and rich in culture and I love the experience of how it feels to be a foreigner in another country and to be treated so well by the local people...
