The Autumn/Winter 2020 runways invite you to ditch your usual understated cold-weather wardrobe for sweeping fringes, graphic prints, vibrant colours and dramatic volume.

Here are 10 trends worth noting and trying as soon as we can get back on the streets — and to the shops:

1. LUCK BE A LADY

Long-sleeved dresses with high necks, cinched waists, ruffles and pussy bows are the order of the day for Autumn/Winter 2020. These ultra-feminine details were seen in a persistent wave across the runways, making a strong case for us to consider the dress as a stylish winter staple, even when it's not of the knitted variety.

2. TURN UP THE VOLUME

More is more this season and we're not just talking big sleeves. Say yes to voluminous silhouettes with cocooning layers, ruffles, bows and all. Roksanda, Carolina Herrera and Richard Quinn welcomed in the big dress and an equally large dose of colour to match.

3. DESERT STONE

As far as winter colours go, rust and earthy red hues are a captivating alternative to the usual wardrobe of grey, black and brown. Punctuate your rust pieces with pops of red or burnt orange as seen at Boss, or wear it head-to-toe like at Gabriele Colangelo.

4. EASY OVER

The cape has never looked as good as it does this season. At Lanvin, the cape is transformed by soft leather and big buttons. At Givenchy it is a dramatic, high-neck asymmetrical layer that blends into the dress beneath it. This often-forgotten classic may just become your new favourite grab-and-go outerwear.

5. DELIBERATELY UNDONE

In an arguably Margiela-inspired move, wardrobe classics are reimagined and reconstructed and sometimes deliberately unfinished. Simone Rocha deconstructed chunky knitwear to combine with her signature complex layering and at Monse, coats and jackets were re-engineered into shoulderless wrap jackets with contrasting fabrics.

6. PEEK-A-BOO

Get playful with clever cut-outs, even underneath all the winter layers. Knitwear and dresses with strategic openings provide unexpected flashes of skin without you having to brave the cold. Whether you reveal a shoulder - or both - flash a collarbone or opt for a keyhole to expose a little bit of chest, cut-outs keep winter layering interesting.

7. SUIT YOURSELF

Women's suiting has leant into the trending nonchalance of menswear's streetwear-inspired suiting. Across the runways, slightly oversized jackets and loose-fitting trousers still dominated. But this season, a touch of femininity has come into the fold as seen with the prevalence of drawn-in waists, feathered accessories and fringed embellishments.

10. LEATHER LAYERS

Leather is having a moment. From the sculpted long black leather coats at Fendi and Miu Miu to the leather capes at Lanvin and Valentino, soft leather layers are the attention-grabbing alternative to your traditional wool coats this winter.
